Dear Jenny,
Oddly, when I read "deaf" in your little piece here, I kept misreading it as "decaf."
One time I met a woman at a conference and had an entire conversation with her without realizing until she mentioned it that she was blind. Then I spotted her white cane. And then the dog with the handle saddle made sense. And then I understood her intense gaze. Who's really blind?
Love, Vivian.

I cannot stand those that say they are hard of hearing and do not wear hearing aids to help them. Most people do not like to wear hearing aids unless they have hair covering it out of embarrassment (while I think one not hearing a person when they are talking to them and they are not responding thus making them look like an ignorant idiot is more embarrassing in the end) you ladies did not know...honest mistake. And usually people that have been hard of hearing for a LONG time are lip readers. If you had made eye contact with them...they may look away. Mind as well as play "stare."

I have to admit, the overly friendly customer service can be creepy, but on my one trip to the local Caribou, my friends and I stayed until they closed. The women there felt so bad about having to ask us to leave soon, they gave us all kinds of free pastries that they hadn't sold by closing time. Mmmmm, free pastries.

My customer service role model is more the soup nazi than the chipper coffee fairies. But then again, maybe that's why I sold ONE book today.

Starey McEyeballs. That's rich. The Caribou by me has the same shit it the water, I think. Lots of calculated chipperness. It gives me the creeps and a reason to stay away from there.

Nah...go ahead and judge that book. I mean, gee, if the guy was hard of hearing and needed to read your lips, why would he be gazing into your eyes? Hmmmm???

AMEN, SISTER! When confronted by such uncomfortable situations, just do what I do. Shout something at the other person in (what sounds like) High German. That usually scares them off. Everyone knows that Germans are crazy.
