Great stream-of-consciousness writing; that was fabulous! I usually save reading your posts for the weekend, when I can take the time they deserve and read them at my leisure, as opposed to quickly scanning shorter posts on other blogs while I'm at work, which is my norm. I usually don't comment on your posts, because my comments would basically be the same each time..."Great writing...Well-told...Enjoyed your perspective...Made me laugh..." You get the idea. Thanks for a most-pleasurable blog to look forward to reading and savouring!

First of all? nicole just posted my NIGHTMARE. Not kidding. Dying, eh, whatever. Sitting next to somebody throwing up? Torture.
Remember those movies of the week that featured real life plane crash stories? When they'd show the "back stories" of some of the passengers and they'd be having fights with their spouses, running late, changing flights, whatever? OK, well, before every flight, I imagine what my back story will look like when they do the movie of the week on the plane crash that's about to happen to me.
Of course, it would probably air on USA or TNT now since most of the networks have sadly put the kibosh on made-for-TV movies.

Phew. Good thing this wasn't an Amazing Race challenge!
Very fun post, though. I especially like the little visual images, like the flight attendent tucking her hair behind her ear.
My worst flight was an 8+ hour international flight and the girl sitting next to me got violently ill because of nerves. When we landed, BOTH she and I were rushed to the airport hospital, and the paramedics didn't speak English, but I could hear them saying we were both sick. It was a horrible day.

i fly ALL the time. two times a week. every week. rain or shine. dragonflys or not. and i have to wonder... would i listen to the signs?
this is the question i posed myself after watching the cheesey teen horror flick - final destination. in the movie (if you havent seen it) a guy has a dream about his plane crashes. he causes a ruckus, gets kicked off the plane, and subsequently misses dying with the rest of his friends.
NOW the question you have to ask yourself is: would you get off the plane if you A) had a bad feeling B) had a bad dream C) saw someone doing something suspicious?
scary part is, i probably would still be on the damn plane! ha!
cheers

Um. Wow. I'm glad I waited until I had time to savor this, because this essay is stellar, Jenny. So beautifully constructed, with really lovely visuals. It feels almost like a piece of gorgeously woven fabric to me, the design carrying through from beginning to end. Humor, pathos. . . it resonates. There are tons of points I want to address. . . too many to go into here. But I'm making notes for later discussion. Honestly, I hope you don't have to have to undergo the trials of Job to inspire writing like this, but if so. . . suffer for our art, we must I'm afraid. If need be I can have the thumbscrews delivered overnight. Really, it's for our. . . erm, I mean your own good.

I, too, am not afraid to fly but usually find myself thinking of death - of dying - midflight. I am particuarly worried how I will feel later this month when I take my 14 year old and board an 8 hour flight over the ocean (water - Ack!).
Oh, and in case no one has told you today, you're a great writer, Jen.

Jen...thought this song applied...glad you are still with us, even though Josh is not.

Dragon Fly...by Josh Clayton Felt

If your road has reached the ocean,
But your legs still want to go,
And if they taught you how to doubt it,
But you know it isn’t so

And if the moments seem to miss you,
And if your partner isn’t there,
And if you know you could reach the treasure,
But you keep coming up for air

If you want to get through,
To the other side,
Let the dragonfly,
Come and give you a ride,
Every day you’re born,
And every night you die,
Let the dragonfly,
Come and give you a ride

And if you see the sun is rising,
But the world is still fast asleep,
And if you feel your heart is flying,
But they keep tying up your feet

If you want to get through,
To the other side,
Let the dragonfly,
Come and give you a ride,
Every day you’re born,
And every night you die,
Let the dragonfly,
Come and give you a ride

It’s gonna be different this time,
They can’t stop your believing,
You cut a whole in your wall last night,
And found a window worth keeping

If you want to get through,
To the other side,
Let the dragonfly,
Come and give you a ride,
Every day you’re born,
Every night you die,
Let the dragonfly,
Come and give you a ride,
Let the dragonfly,
Let the dragonfly
