R: And they didn't select you? I'm astounded. This is what's wrong with our justice system!

T: You're like the jury duty posterchild! Maybe you and I can go on tour together, preaching about civic pride.

V: Please tell me you're kidding about the witch trials. Please? No, there were no dramatic re-enactments in mine. We take things seriously here in Chicago. It's not some game or performance art, like it apparently is in NYC.

R: Thank you! And fear not - I scored some crystal meth in the cafeteria. I still haven't slept.

J: Why you dis the underpants? I suppose you say "panties" in Atlanta? [shudder] I just creeped myself out.

L: Welcome! You were obviously very mature for your age...

Your conjugal issues had me rolling! Great post!
I was summoned for jury duty once. I was only 17. They had messed up so they let me off.

I agree with Nat. Underpants, Jenny? V. funny. But still, a great word, bespeaking your wholesomeness, yor salt-of-the-earth rightness and preparedness (6!) for the position of foreperson. And I applaud your Nancy Drewish observational skillz. You'll have this whole thing figured out in no time. I feel for the attorneys. They don't stand a chance.
Hey, can you skip this whole juror thing and skip right to judge? I think the City of Chicago woudl be better for it. Definitely.

excellent. i love how the small details become such vital elements of the story, how you build a story around them.
i hope you stay awake long enough to find out if you're on a trial or not.

Dear Jenny,
I recently fulfilled my civic duty, too, here in New York. Thankfully I was not selected to be on a panel and got to spend my days hanging out in the waiting room with my friend's partner who is a famous social anthropoligist and very knowledgeable about dog training. I learned a lot about Cherry Grove and standard poodles. Fascinating! Anyway, we also had a juror training video. Did the one you watched begin with the recreation of witch being drowned? (The production value was notably terrible. Essentially they took a young woman in dark cloak and shoved her in a swimming pool.) Do you have witches in Chicago?
Love,
Vivian

Hmm...when I had jury duty, being the jury foreperson was totally random.
I loved my jury group and the whole experience. I really don't think people should shy away from being on a trial (well, most people). It really is an eye-opening experience.

Do you know what kind of case it is yet? When I got called, it was a medical malpractice suit. They were suing the doctor because--get this--their 94-year-old mother, um, died? I never would have made it on that jury. "Mr. Sheard, do you believe you can keep an open mind in this case?" "Give me a break, she's had one foot in the grave for the last decade...er...I mean...SURE!"

S1: Wait - you're an attorney, too? Why didn't I know that? This is an important development. I've long believed that everyone should know a plumber, a doctor, and a lawyer. Now I just need to meet a plumber and a doctor.

S2: Err, it's... I... I'm not at liberty to discuss any details of the trial. That's illegal, you know. Ask Shari. She'll tell you. In fact, can I hold him in contempt? I object! Badgering! Leading the witness!

Aaaagh! At what point do your usable brain cells just give up and shut down? And I only know it from the counsel side of the courtroom!
It might get better once the case in chief begins, depending on what type of case it is... but if it's anything involving actuarial tables, well, you're just plain screwed. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you... and, ***cue inspiring march music and patriotic fireworks*** you keep up the good work, fight the good fight, Juror Amadeo. ***music fades, fireworks end***
