Like the Dickens

“Why can’t you be more like Charles Dickens?” she asked.

I was unprepared for the question.

“Dickens? What are you talking about?”

“Do you know how long it took him to write A Christmas Carol?”

“No, I d-“

“Six weeks. It took him six weeks, Jenny.”

“Wow. But, I mean, did he have a day job at the time?”

“And what about Anne Rice? Interview with a Vampire? One month.”

“Geez. That’s… that’s impressive.”

I remember Kirsten Dunst’s hair kept growing back, every time she cut it.

“You need focus. That’s what you need.”

“I want to take a bee-keeping class.”

“Charles Dickens!”

What about Sylvester Stallone? Script for "Rocky" in THREE DAYS. Maybe Sly needs to be our role model.

Hey, thoughts about bee-keeping are very important indeed!

Bee-keeping!! Yay!

What? What did I say?!

Posted by: shari at January 19, 2009 10:34 PM

I'd take that bee-keeping class sooner rather than later.

Our bees are disappearing. :-(

vahid: what? three days? no wonder they built that statue of him in philly.

hilly: thank you! see - you get it.

shari: hey, i'm going to need an apprentice bee-keeper at some point. now accepting applications.

dave2: i know! saving the world, one hive at a time - that's my motto.

But bee keeping is so edgy. Who needs to knock out some novel in a few days when you can pursue such a cool hobby?

Posted by: sizzle at January 20, 2009 09:28 AM

It took F. Scott Fitzgerald nine years to write Tender is the Night. I'm assuming he did some beekeeping between drafts.

Maybe you could write a book about bee keeping.

Posted by: churlita at January 20, 2009 09:51 PM

sizzle: i could totally be an edgy beekeeper. i'll paint the hives black.

cheryl: excellent point! think of all the honey i'll have in those nine years.

churlita: that's not a bad idea! kind of like an insider's take on beekeeping. i could call it something like the secret life of bees. it has movie potential even. :)

Jenny, bee-keeping is great I'm sure, but blogging is better. I'm just sayin'.
