Without even checking, I automatically know that the blinking light on my voicemail is a message from him. He worries about me. He wants to see me. This has been going on for almost a year now. I tell him it needs to end soon, but he protests, and says that we have to see each other for another six months or so while we straighten a few things out.

He just seems to know what I need. A slight adjustment here, remove an attachment there… he gets me, you know? And he always calls to make sure I’ll show up, because I’m important to him. I’m sure of it.

At first I felt kind of embarrassed about this. A little ashamed. But now, I just accept our relationship for what it is – he calls, I stop by. Every six weeks or so. It is what it is. So, no, I don’t feel bad paying him. A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do.
::sigh::

    You have braces? If so, this was a really clever way to describe your experience. I had them when I was a kid and it was MURDER. It hurt when I got them adjusted. Maybe things have changed.

    rhea: indeed, i do. fortunately, they’re the invisalign kind, so a lot less painful than the ones i had as a kid. unfortunately, a lot more expensive… :)

    Well,at least you’re getting your needs met. No one can fault you for that.

    Friends with benefits are the best when the benefits include lovely white teeth, fresh breath, and excellent overall oral hygiene.

    Ah, braces. I still dream the feeling of wearing my retainer every once in a blue moon. Be patient so you get the longterm payoff.

    I have been reading your blog for about two years or so I think… Hard to keep a track of time. I even had a dream of one of your posts a while back, and I keep returning to some of your themes and characters that effected me in the past. I have no idea how I bumped into this site and it never occurred to me to comment anything. I just realized now that this in particular post was like straight from my own life and I felt like telling you that your writings have been both a refreshing break from me-world and a way integrate it all back into me-world, so… No wait! What I’m simply trying to say is thanks.

    churlita: i appreciate your support! sadly, getting my needs met means never having enough money for a down payment on a condo, but i guess we all have to make choices. :)
    sir: are you married to a dental hygienist? c’mon… you can tell me!
    claire: but do you have dreams where all your teeth break off? because i have those constantly! what does it mean?
    katson: so you had braces too? we should form a club. really, though – this was the nicest comment. thank you!

    I did have a dream where my teeth broke or fell out or something… it’s on my blog somewhere. I remember because someone commented that in dream language it means you’re not saying something you should or want to.
