Gone Fishin’

I’m heading out at the crack of dawn tomorrow morning to drive up to my friend Dee-Dee’s family cabin in the northern wilderness of Wisconsin. The last time we went there, Dee and I were almost killed by a combination of duck hunters and kayak fatigue. The time before that, Natasha, Dee-Dee and I got stranded in the middle of the lake when we couldn’t get the boat motor to start, and had to take turns rowing to shore with one oar. Oh yeah, and then we killed a pileated woodpecker on the way home.
But this time, it’s going to be smooth sailing. You know why? Because I bought a special cowboy hat at Target that I’m going to wear all weekend, and it makes me feel rugged in the way that only a straw cowboy hat made in China can make you feel.
Assuming I make it home alive, I will hopefully have photos to share and stories to tell. Until then, have a great Labor Day weekend!

No picture of the special cowboy hat? We are waiting……

  2. delmer Says:

Did you use the one oar to paddle in ever-widening circles until the path of the arc banged you into the shore?
And I second the motion for pictures of your rugged look.

    You’re funny.

robin: i don’t look rugged enough here in the city, so i’ll have to wait until i’m in the wilderness.
delmer: no, we did tag-team rowing… three strokes on ones side, then quick pass the oar to the other side… then pass it back.
ashley: thanks! let’s hope my latest brush with nature doesn’t rob me of my sense of humor. :)

No matter how many times I refresh this page, a photo of you in your new hat never appears!

where in wisconsin? (because everyone knows, if you can’t have substantial topography, the lakes of northern wisconsin or minnesota are as good as it gets…)

Smooth sailing? I thought you were kayaking. *sigh* I wish I could keep up.

Hey, have fun! Are you getting all Sarah Palin on us?
Can’t wait to see the photos when you get back.

Sure hope that Dee-Dee has a Ms Pac-Man console up at that cabin, because I’ve been practicing and I’m looking for a rematch.

i was walking through customs at o’hare yesterday and i could have sworn i saw you wandering around wearing one of those giant paper face masks that some people in japan do during cold and flu season. i mean, i knew it couldn’t possibly be you so i didn’t go up to the woman to say hello or anything, but it’s nice to see confirmation that i didn’t totally dis you or anything. hope you had a great trip!

You’ll be reassured to know that AK’s Chinese cowboy hat (purchased at REI for $35) helped her greatly on our recent trip to Mexico. Of course, once we got there we saw that you could buy the same Chinese cowboy hats outside tourist attractions for $2.50.

dave2: what? must be that mac of yours… :)
matt: way WAY up north – near minocqua. you can almost step into michigan.
shari: i attached a sail to my kayak… my arms were tired.
THB: i am, as a matter of fact. i’m going to kill a moose next weekend.
vahid: that’s the one thing she doesn’t have, but maybe i’ll suggest it to her!
kat: that’s hilarious! no, i haven’t resorted to the paper masks yet, although once flu season starts and everyone on the train starts sneezing on me, i may reconsider.
cheryl: fortunately, my chinese cowboy hat was only $16.99 at target, but now i might need to make a trip to mexico just for the cheap hats.
